The Source of Creation

SPACE exists as much in our day-to-day lives as in the realm of galaxies. Whether it's the space between two thoughts or two distant stars, the expanse is infinite, immeasurable. The universe--and each of us--would be non-existent without space.  

As a pianist, some of my most powerful experiences of space occur in music making.  Music is as dependent upon space, or silence, as on sound. Why? Because in the pause between notes the music is born. 

My mother, a pianist trained in the finest European tradition, would often say, "I don't know why so many musicians play like it's 5 minutes to 5 and they're trying to catch a 5 o'clock bus." It's true. Notes are usually the sole focus of practice. But the greatest performers, regardless of genre, are those who dare to go beyond safety to express the depths of silence. Then, the music breathes.

Likewise, in everyday life we are more enchanted with concrete things--houses, sofas, cars--than with space and silence. Yet, scientists remind us that reality is not what it seems: at every level of existence from quasars to kitchen tables, there's FAR more space than there is solid matter. 

Even more importantly, space is not inert or empty, It has a vital function. Space or the void is where matter is formed and shaped.  Matter needs Space!

This principle unites physics and metaphysics, science and religion: "In the beginning," says Genesis, "the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep." Hovering over the abyss, the Spirit or the "wind of God" created the world.

Strikingly, the phenomenon of "black holes" mirrors the Biblical description of Creation:  

"Black holes often are thought of as just endless pits in space and time that destroy everything they pull toward them. But new findings confirm...(that) black holes can drive extraordinarily powerful winds that push out and force star formation and shape the fate of a galaxy. Super-massive black holes are suspected to lurk in the hearts of many—if not all—large galaxies...profoundly influencing how they grow."

From Genesis to Astrophysics, space is the fount of life. God--the Creative Force--is there. So, why do you deny the space in your life? It is always near. Just as that Infinite power hovered over the deep, it is hovering on the verge of creation in the space between your actions, thoughts, breaths.
