Protection: Part 1

EVERY spiritual tradition responds to the human need for safety and PROTECTION. Here I've created in music a PRAYER for PROTECTION. It combines a Chorale from Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" with the 19th century hymn, "Nearer My God to Thee."

The chorale offers guidance: "Whatever troubles your heart, commend yourself to the trustiest care of Him who controls the heavens; He who gives clouds, air, and winds their paths, course and track, will also find ways where your feet can walk."

The hymn resolves: 

"Still all my song shall be nearer, my God, to Thee."  

"Nearer My God to Thee" was played on the Titanic as it was sinking.  George Orrell, the bandmaster of the rescue ship, Carpathia said, "After the Titanic struck the iceberg, the band began to play bright music, dance music – anything that would prevent the passengers from becoming panic-stricken. Various passengers began to think of the death that faced them and asked the band to play hymns. The one which appealed to all was 'Nearer My God to Thee'."
